Minutes. The minutes from July 22 were approved.

Regional Sustainability Roundtable. The roundtable earlier in the day, attended by about 75 people, produced informational updates on initiatives around Colorado, networking, and energizing conversations about potential initiatives in Southwest Colorado.

Ballot initiatives. After a brief discussion about the implications of the proposed revenue-cutting ballot initiatives, following resolution was moved, seconded, and approved: That the Policy Committee recommend to the SASCO Board that they sign the petition from Coloradans for Responsible Reform or a similar document opposing Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61.

September LPSD: The event will be a social gathering with about half the time devoted to discussion of Sustainability Alliance initiatives.

  • Audience: Sustainability Alliance mailing list members and the public
  • Topics: SASCO strategic plan? Specific action initiatives? Choose the latter.
    • Ideas from August 12 Board meeting: reusable bag initiative; repair program; others from August 26 strategic planning meeting; other ideas from membership.
    • In the course of discussion, the idea emerged of a statewide initiative for extended producer responsibility to reduce the waste stream.
    • Need flip charts to record ideas, sticky dots for voting, and sign-up sheets for people to express interest.
  • Format
    • About ½ hour for socializing
    • Dick will facilitate ideas conversation
    • Kelly Miller and Eliza Searles will introduce bag initiative
    • Dick will solicit other ideas to be recorded on flip-charts
    • Set up for voting on top ideas and sign-up sheets for interest
  • Location: Lost Dog, subject to availability. Rebecca will check. SASCO will buy a round of appetizers.
  • Publicity: website and mailing (Dick); PSAs (Rebecca) with draft text from Dick; Buzztown and Facebook (Candee). Possible title: “Sustainability with a Mission.”

Region 9. The Southwest Colorado Index update is on hold until spring, but Region 9 is still interested in our collaboration on the project. Their immediate focus is updating the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) and our input is invited, including a nomination for the advisory committee.

  • Ideas to contribute include zero waste, green jobs, local currency, Local First.
  • Terry Woodward is available and willing to serve on the advisory committee. Dick will communicate the nomination to Region 9.

Next meeting. The fourth Thursday is September 23, but this may conflict with 4CORE public events around this year’s energy tour. Dick will check on the schedule and consider rescheduling our meeting as appropriate.
